Church of Frederick


The Church of Frederick, also called the Marble Church (Marmorkirken), is one of the key attractions of Copenhagen .

History of the Church

The building was built in 1740. The initiator of the construction was King Frederick V, who wanted to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first representative of the Oldenburg dynasty. But the grandiose plan for the construction of the church Federica was not implemented immediately. The construction of the Marble Church was suspended due to lack of funds. Only in 1894 the temple was completed thanks to the material support of the wealthy industrialist Karl Frederik Tietgen. However, due to lack of money and the inability to buy expensive materials, the new architect significantly reduced its height and replaced marble with cheap limestone.

The modern look of the building

Now the church of Frederick is one of the important monuments of history in Copenhagen , which is also a striking example of the Rococo style. But the building is not only known for this.
