Castellet

Many tourists, planning a trip to Denmark , are limited to Copenhagen alone. And it's not surprising - the country itself is small, and its capital is just a fount of attractions and various tourist sites. And although Denmark is also called a country of castles , this article is not about them, but about the fortress Castellet in Copenhagen. This citadel is an excellent example of the military forts of his time.

What are the features of Castellet Castle?

In northern Europe, this is one of the most successfully preserved forts. In addition, he is rightfully considered a fairly powerful fortification structure. The fortress Castellet was built in the XVII century, in the form of a pentagonal star. The first thing that opens the eyes of visitors is the Royal Gates. By the way, the fortress has two entrances, and in addition to the main gate on the south side, there are also the northern ones. The architecture of the building is Baroque. The main entrance is decorated with pilasters, and crowned by his bust of King Frederick III. Before the gates are installed the so-called caponiers - structures designed to keep the attack on the fort.

On the territory of Castellet Fortress there are also five bastions, each of which has its own unique name: the royal, royal, county, the bastion of the princess and the bastion of the prince. The citadel is surrounded on all sides by a moat. On the territory of the fort you can see the Commander's House, which serves as the residence of the manager of Castellet Fortress. Built in 1725, it is a two-storey building in baroque style, with a red tile roof and a royal bas-relief. There are also barracks for soldiers.

Among the Castellet structures there is also a church. It was built in 1704. The architecture of the building is Baroque. In the backyard of the church there is a prison complex. It was built in 1725. The peculiar windows between the church and the prison allowed the prisoners to be present at the service in the church.

Probably the most popular place among tourists at Castellet Fort is an old windmill. It is located in the south-west corner of the fortress. Since there were no places to deliver food during the siege, several mills were installed on the citadel's territory. Unfortunately, only one has survived to this day. Walking through the fortress, you can see a number of other buildings. For example, the powder house, storage rooms and sculpture of King Frederick III.

Fortress Castellet today

Despite peacetime, Castellet is part of the structure of the defense department of Denmark, and in the Commander's House is the official residence of the Danish defense minister. However, for the citizens themselves, and for tourists too, the Castellet fortress is an excellent park where you can have a great rest, soak up the green grass and even do yoga.

A lot of social events are held in the citadel. For example, every year the Royal Ballet of Denmark gives an idea here, and the spectators are located directly on the grass. Quite often, concerts are organized here, including military ones.
