Church of Holmen


The Church of Holmen is located in the center of Copenhagen in Denmark . Originally it was a building where there was a stamping press for anchors. But in 1563 King Christian IV transformed it into a naval church. Also, Holman's church is known as the place of the wedding of Crown Princess Margrethe II, the ruling queen of Denmark, and Prince Henrik in 1967. Now in the territory of Church Of Holmen there is a cemetery with burials of naval heroes of Denmark.

General information

The Church of Holman has avoided major fires in Copenhagen , so the facade and most of the interior have survived to our time since the 1600s. In 1705 a chapel with a crypt appeared on the territory of the church. Now 34 Danish naval heroes are buried here, including Niels Juiel, Nils Benzon and Peter Jansen Wessel.

The Church of Holmen is open daily. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the church can be visited from 10-00 to 16-00, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-00 to 15-30, on Sundays and on public holidays from 12-00 to 16-00. The rest of the time the church is closed due to religious ceremonies.

What to see?

  1. Altar. In 1619, an altar was built in the style of the late Renaissance. It was made by the master cabinetmaker Angelbert Milsted. In 1661, after the expansion of the church, the altar was transferred to different rooms, but now it stands where it was originally installed.
  2. The chair. From 1662 until now, the pulpit is located in the south-west corner of the hall. Carved oak structure of natural color more than three meters in height is the main decoration of the hall.
  3. Fonts. In total there are three ritual fonts in Holman's church. The first was created in 1646 from marble, details are decorated with gilding, height - 117 cm. Pay attention to the base of the font in the form of four human legs. This unique detail has survived to our time. The second white marble font stands in the gallery in the southern part of the church, which is called the Epiphany chapel. On the wall hangs Anton Dorf's painting "Christ and the Little Children" of 1877. The third font was created from black marble and sandstone in 1921 for a large chapel.
  4. Organ. In the church there were about 6 organs, which replaced each other for a century. At the moment, since 2000, the Holmen Church has established a six-regiment body from Klop Organs and Harpsichords.
  5. Ship. In the middle of the intersection of the four chapels, the model of Niels Juel's ship "Christy Queens" is suspended. The model was made in 1904 at the naval shipyard Otto Dorg on a scale of 1:35.

The Holmen Church can be reached by buses 1A, 26, M1, M2 or by metro to Kongens Nyutor square . Also, if you prefer a sea voyage, you can swim to the temple by ferry boats 991 and 992. A pier near the main library.
