History of the Copenhagen Town Hall

The Copenhagen Town Hall is the administration building in Copenhagen in the very center of the city, used to hold city councils (formerly the City Hall).

The building that you see now is already the third city hall and first it was twice erected in the distant 1479 and 1728, but alas, they were damaged during the fires in the city in 1728 and 1795. The modern building was built approximately in 1893-1905, and the town hall was commissioned to designate the famous Danish architect Martin Nyrop, who created it in the style of the Northern Art Nouveau. In 1955, the famous astronomical clock was launched in the town hall, which in due time was created by Jens Olsen, and until now they are among the most accurate.

What to see?

You will not be able to visit the room with the clock for free, but rest assured that it is worth it and we strongly advise you to take a look at everything in order to appreciate the complicated mechanism of the clock (more than 15 000 items) that is in the glass case. An interesting feature is that every visitor can visually examine it. These watches would not be so special if they did not have such additional functions as calendars taking into account the dates of the Christian holidays, the state of the phase change of the moon and even the plan of planets motion with a star map. Above the main entrance to the town hall there is a gilded figure of Absalon, who in 1177 served as archbishop in Denmark .

It is impossible not to pay attention to the square itself, where the town hall is located, for there are no less interesting things on it, for example, a fountain called "Bull tearing the dragon", on which a sculpture depicting the battle of two beasts is installed, but surprisingly the bull was the winner in struggle. On this same square, a bronze statue of "Trumpeters with Luras" is installed, showing two warriors blowing into the lur (wind instrument).

There is a legend that these same warriors will trumpet into tools if an attack is made on the country, which will awaken the great hero Holger and he will defend the homeland. But even trumpeters can blow out the tools in the event that an innocent girl passes by their monument. Legends or not, but to this day we have never heard the sound of their instrument.

You can visit the Copenhagen Town Hall even at times of meetings or councils, but you will not be allowed into the hall with politicians, of course.
