The Berber Museum


The Berber Museum in Agadir , also called the Amazigh Cultural Heritage Museum, is a municipal museum in a small two-story building near the Agadir seafront. The museum stores a collection of objects of cultural and historical heritage of the Berbers of the XVIII-XIX centuries.

History of creation

Berbers, they are in the personal words of the Amazighs, which means "free men" are the indigenous tribes of northern Africa. Their language and cultural traditions were once influenced by the peoples of Africa and the Mediterranean part of Europe at the same time. The history of Berbers is actually the richest and has nearly 9 thousand years.

The museum was created and opened for visiting in the beginning of 2000 by French volunteers with great support from the leadership of Agadir, who is eager to preserve the original culture of the Berber tribes in every way possible.

What's interesting in the museum?

In the Berber Museum in Agadir, there are 3 halls. In the first hall you will see materials and products of local production. Visiting this room, you will see luxurious carpets, kitchen utensils, clay and ceramic products, various building materials. In the second room visitors will find a collection of musical instruments, folk costumes, an exhibition of weapons, miscellaneous talismans, ancient manuscripts and many artisan products. And finally, the third hall will please tourists with its unique collection of precious stones and jewelry with them. You can see bracelets, necklaces, earrings, chains, brooches, all this is very fine jewelry work and a variety of sometimes bizarre shapes. The collection of jewelry is quite solid and includes almost 200 items. Pay attention to the beautiful pendant Mass in the form of a disk with a spiral, which is the main symbol and pearl of the Berber Museum.

On the ground floor of the Berber Museum there is a small exhibition of paintings of local painters depicting in their canvases mainly residents in traditional Berber dresses, as well as a library of books on the Berber culture.

The guide will tell you about the daily life of the ancient Moroccan people, about how they lived, what they did, on what instruments they played and what they hunted. Visiting the museum will be an occasion not only to consider ornate patterns on carpets, the finest painting of ceramics and appreciate the laborious work of jewelry masters. The Berbers lived rather modestly, and beautiful objects of utensils were often not used for their intended purpose, but were made to decorate the home and create comfort. Many of the exhibits from the collection of the museum have their own history, helping to understand the distinct culture of the indigenous tribes of Morocco .

The museum is located in the north-western part of the city, next to the waterfront, on the narrow street of Ave Hassan, which is located between the streets of Avenue Mohammed V and Boulevard Hassan II. The Berber Museum in Agadir is easily accessible by taxi, car and bus. The bus stop is located next to Avenue Mohammed V. Visiting the Berber Museum paid. Adult admission ticket costs 20 dirhams, children's ticket costs 10 dirhams.
