Lake Rudolph


Lake Rudolph or, as it is also called, Lake Turkana - the largest alkaline lake and one of the largest salt lakes in the world. It is also the largest permanent lake in the desert. Lake Rudolph is in Africa, mainly in Kenya . A small part of it is located in Ethiopia. The size of the lake is amazing. It can easily be confused with the sea. More about the lake

The lake was discovered by Samuel Teleki. A traveler with his friend Ludwig von Hoenel came across this lake in 1888 and decided to name it in honor of Prince Rudolph. But over time, the locals gave him another name - Turkana, in honor of one of the tribes. It is also called the jade sea because of the color of the water.

Features of the lake

The area of ​​the lake is 6405 km ², the maximum depth is 109 meters. What else is famous Lake Rudolph? For example, the fact that there are a lot of crocodiles, more than 12 thousand individuals.

Near the lake, many valuable anthropological and paleontological findings were made. A region with remains of the oldest hominids was found near the north-eastern coasts. Subsequently, this zone was named Koobi-Fora and the status of an archaeological site. Additional popularity of this lake brought the skeleton of a boy, found nearby. The skeleton is estimated by specialists about 1.6 million years. This find was called the Turkana Boy.

The Islands

On the territory of the lake there are three volcanic islands. Each of them is a separate national park. The largest of these islands is the South. He was investigated by the Adamson family in 1955. The central island, Crocodile Island , is an active volcano. On the North Island there is the Sibyloy National Park .

The nearest town to the lake is Lodwar. It has an airport, which means that you can easily get there by plane. But from Lodvara to the lake you need to go by car.
