Park of lemurs

Description of sight

The park was founded in 2000 by the biologist Laurent Amorik and scientist Makism Allordji. They set out to protect endemic species of Madagascar . Today, the reserve covers 5 hectares. It is located on the river bank 22 km south-west of the capital and is open to the public.

The institution belongs to the Ministry of Forestry and Water Management. Also here projects are developed from Total and Kolos of Madagascar. Students and schoolchildren come here to not only get acquainted with the peculiarities of the local nature, but also to help employees take care of animals, plant trees or clean up the territory. By the way, many workers from local communities work in the reserve on a voluntary basis.

Main field of activity

The main goal of the establishment is the breeding of lemurs, which are inhabited in the park by 9 species: varie, brown, sifak, cat, meek, etc. Almost all of them are under threat of extinction. Employees of the reserve find sick animals or kids in forests and mountains, and local people bring also mammals.

Behind the lemurs in the park are looked after, treated, grown and taught to the natural habitat, in order to eventually release them into the wild. Employees of the institution feed their pets, giving them plates with goodies (fruits).

In the reserve healthy lemurs can move freely throughout the territory, and sick individuals are kept in enclosures. Some pets are nocturnal, and for their convenience were built small sleeping lodges.
