Jameson Park and the Rosary

Durban is the provisional capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal, a city on the shores of the Indian Ocean and at the same time the most popular resort in South Africa. The sandy beaches with which it is famous have always attracted tourists here, which is not surprising, because the sunny weather here lasts 320 days a year. The influence of such a favorable climate could not but affect the richest flora of this region.

For a visiting tourist it becomes clear through the numerous parks that he is invited to visit as local attractions. Among them there is the famous Jameson Park, which enchants with its beauty and amazes with the riot of colors. This is a favorite holiday destination not only for tourists, but also for locals. In the park of Jameson people go to have a quiet time in nature or have an active picnic with friends. But the main decoration of the park is, undoubtedly, its stunning rose garden.

History of the park

Once upon a time, in the territory now occupied by the Jameson Park, dozens of hectares of pineapples grew. Despite the fact that the plantation gave a pretty good harvest, the city authorities ordered to break the park in this place. Call it decided in honor of a particularly significant for Durban person - Robert James, a man who actively takes part in city life and later became his mayor. But in addition to his active citizenship, he was also widely known as an ardent botanist.

It was in the era of Robert (a total of about 30 years in various positions - from the adviser to the mayor) the gardening of Durban took place at the fastest pace. This contribution is felt to this day - some park areas of the city have survived since the reign of Jameson. Therefore, having decided to perpetuate the name of this man in the name of the most popular park and unique rosary, the townspeople paid tribute to this remarkable person, his wisdom and love for nature.

Jameson Park and the Rosary today

Today, the famous rose garden is located in the park, and pleases visitors with its flowering for many weeks, because there are more than two hundred varieties of this noble flower. But still the best months for visiting are the autumn months - September, October and November. Despite the fact that in Durban, the summer lasts all year round, but it is at this time that the ratio of humidity and heat is optimal for flowering.

These days, the fragrance of more than 600 rose bushes spreads even beyond the limits of the park, hundreds of couples are sent here to follow the legendary "love route". This tradition has existed for a long time: if you are invited to the rose garden of Jameson, then there is an explanation in love.

How to get there?

One of the most convenient and accessible ways to get to this romantic place is to fly from Cape Town to Durban by an internal flight. The park is located in the city center (Morningside district), a few kilometers from the railway station. The entrance to the park is free.
