It is believed that the godparents on the day of the sacrament acquire a special spiritual connection with the baby, which is why, in the traditional sense, they should take upon themselves the basic expenses for holding this solemn event. Consider what the godparents give to baptism and what they answer for.
What gives a godson to a godfather?
If we talk about what should traditionally be given by the godfather, we can not fail to notice that it is he who is responsible for the largest and most responsible expenses:
- the purchase of a cross for baptism;
- to pay for the sacrament in the church (or make a donation for it);
- organization of celebration of this event (feast).
If we talk about the realities of our life, then everything here is somewhat different. As a rule, they pay for the sacrament, and its celebration is the parents themselves. And if they decided that the cross should be gold, then they often get it themselves. However, if the parents agree on the version of the cross that you can afford, then this gift can and should be chosen by the godfather.
What does the godson provide?
The godmother was more fortunate than her father, and the sacrament does not require too much waste from her. The list of what the godmother should give is limited by such positions:
- kryzhma (a special fabric, which wraps the baby after bathing);
- a christening shirt or a dress (ideally the item should be homespun or embroidered by hand);
- Icon of the saint whose name is given to the child at baptism.
Even if you know that the godmothers are gifted to the christening , and are ready to make these gifts, beforehand, still contact the parents and find out their views on it. Perhaps, they do not aspire to observe all traditions to trifles and will offer you to present another present, and everything you need for christening has already been acquired.
