House of Carlos Gardel


To imagine Buenos Aires without passionate tango is almost impossible. This is such a national trait, like borscht with lard in Ukrainians, and cabbage soup for Russians. However, food in Russia is not dedicated to quarters, but things are different in the Argentine capital. In honor of the passionate dance, the area of ​​Abasto is built here, the main highlight of which is the house of Carlos Gardel, the most famous tango dancer in the whole of Argentina.

What is interesting about the building?

It is only necessary to step onto the streets of the Abasto district, as it immediately becomes clear that creative people live here who are not used to restrain their feelings. Bright colors cover the walls of houses, various drawings and portraits of famous dancers only complement the overall picture. The house of Carlos Gardel perfectly fits into the overall landscape. In 1927, a famous Argentine actor and dancer bought it for his mother and lived here with her until 1933.

After the death of all the heirs of Carlos Gardel, the house changed its owners several times, gradually losing its original appearance. However, in 1996, businessman Eduardo Eurnekian bought the premises, and in 2000 presented it to the authorities of Buenos Aires as a gift. In 2004 a museum was opened here, which is dedicated to the life and work of Carlos Gardel.

First of all, the building was subjected to some reconstruction, and with the help of the city archives it was returned to its original appearance. The house of Carlos Gardel covers an area of ​​325 square meters. m. His exposition includes the personal belongings of the dancer, in addition, some rooms are restored: the kitchen, the ironing room and the toilet room. The permanent exhibition is also represented by various photographs, films, plates. In the further plans of the museum administration - to create here a cultural center for lovers of tango from around the world.

The house museum is open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11.00 to 18.00. On weekends and on public holidays, the exhibition can be viewed from 10:00 to 19:00. The entrance fee for all categories and age groups is $ 5. On Tuesdays the museum is closed, and on Wednesdays the entrance is free.

The bus stop closest to the house museum is Viamonte 2924, through which routes Nos. 29A, 29B, 29C, 99A pass. Nearby are two metro stations - Corrientes and Córdoba.
