Museum of Modern Art (Buenos Aires)

The district of Saint-Telmo in Buenos Aires is a tasty morsel for tourists. The old architecture of the colonial period is best preserved here. Its streets are paved with paving stones, and in ancient buildings cozy cafes, antique shops and tango clubs alternate. It is in this atmospheric area that the Museum of Contemporary Art is located.

What is interesting about the museum?

Modern art is a rather complex concept, which includes many aspects. To somehow help the common man to understand its comprehensive structure, in 1956 the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires was established.

The founders of this organization are two key figures - art historian Rafael Skirru and sculptor Pablo Kuratell Manes. Their creative tandem has achieved results in 7000 exhibits, which today are part of the museum's exposition.

The beginning of the XXI century was marked for the organization by total reconstruction. More than 1.5 billion dollars and about 5 years left for the museum to open its doors again for visitors. Today it is housed in a 1918 building built in the neo-Renaissance style. The mansion has several floors, a basement and a mezzanine, where there is a small conference room and a modest cinema.

Museum collection

The museum's foundation covers the milestones of the art of Argentina since 1920 to the present day. Some of the exhibits were donated to the collection from private hands. For example, such a gesture of goodwill was a collection of photographs from all over Argentina. They are depicted works of industrial design, erected over the past two decades.

The exposition of the Museum of Modern Art is structured over the years. For example, in the hall of the 50's you can see pictures of such masters as A. Greco, M. Peluffo, R. Santantonin, L. Wells, etc. The collection of the 60s is represented by the works of R. Macció, R. Polessello, M Martorell, C. Paternosto. In addition to paintings, the exposition of the museum is perfectly complemented by engravings and various compositions.

Quite often there are temporary exhibitions devoted to certain artists, seminars and various master classes are organized, and special excursions for schoolchildren are organized twice a week. For example, on November 18, 2016, the museum opened a large-scale exposition devoted to the works of Pablo Picasso. Here, original pictures and sketches of the great creator were demonstrated. The exhibition was organized in honor of its 60th anniversary museum.
