Basilica of Santo Domingo


The Santo Domingo Basilica is one of the most important religious buildings in Argentina due to its rich historical heritage and the beauty of the interior. It is located at the intersection of Dena Funes and Veles Sarsfield streets in Buenos Aires .

History of creation

The first building of the basilica was built almost 4 centuries ago by the Dominicans who arrived here on the settlement. However, that building and the subsequent were destroyed by the waters of the ever-spreading La Cañada River. The structure, which has survived to our days, was built in 1783, then restored several times.

The temple building is made in the classical Italian architectural style. Here you can distinguish the sculptures of the Crucifixion of Christ and the saints Dominique and Francis. In addition, in memory of the donors for the construction of this temple on the altar are engraved emblems of families, whose contribution to the piggy bank of the basilica was particularly great.
