Botanical Garden (Buenos Aires)


In the capital of Argentina there are many parks, most of which are located in the Palermo district. The most interesting of them is the botanical garden (Jardin Botanico Carlos Thais de la Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires).

General information about the park

It is located in the suburbs of the city - in Palermo. Its area is small and equal to 6.98 hectares. The territory of the park is limited to three streets (Avenida Las Heras, Avenida Santa Fe, Arab Republic of Syria) and its shape resembles a triangle.

The founder of the botanical garden in Buenos Aires is the French landscape designer Carlos Theis. He, along with his family settled in the territory of the current park and in 1881 built a chic estate in the English style. The building, incidentally, has survived to this day, today it houses the administration of the institution.

Carlos Tice was engaged in planting the entire city and building parks. The opening of the botanical garden occurred in 1898 on September 7, and in 1996 it was declared a national monument.

Description of the Botanical Garden in Buenos Aires

The territory of the park is divided into three zones:

  1. Landscape oriental garden . In this part of the park you can see plants brought from Asia (ginkgo), Oceania (casuarina, eucalyptus, acacia), Europe (hazel, oak) and Africa (palms, bracken ferns).
  2. Mixed French garden. This territory is decorated in a symmetrical style of the XVII-XVIII century. Here are copies of the statues of Mercury and Venus.
  3. Italian garden. In it grow trees, introduced by the Roman botanist Pliny the Younger: laurel, poplar, cypress. In this part of the park there are copies of Roman sculptures, for example, a she-wolf that feeds Romulus and Remus.

A total of about 5,500 species of plants grow on the territory of the Botanical Garden in Buenos Aires, many of which are endangered. Here there are such rare representatives of the flora as the seiba from Brazil, sequoia from the USA, etc. Near each tree and bush is a sign with a full description. Plants are watered from sprayers, so they have a bright and fresh look.

In the garden are several greenhouses, 5 greenhouses, fountains and 33 artworks, which include monuments, busts and statues. Among the latter, one can distinguish a bronze copy of Ernesto Biondi - "Saturnalia". Especially popular among tourists is the cactus forest and the butterfly garden.

On the territory of the botanical garden is a large number of shops where you can hide and relax in the shade of trees, breathe the fresh air, listen to the singing of birds.

Interesting fact

The administration of the institution provides shelter for homeless cats, which are home to a huge number. Initially, the park was inhabited by animals thrown out by local residents. Employees tried to move them to another place, but subsequently the defenders of nature considered these actions inhumane.

In the botanical garden created all the conditions for cats. Volunteers work here, who take care, treat, vaccinate, sterilize and feed animals, and also look for new owners.

You can reach Palermo from Buenos Aires by car via Av. Gral. Las Heras or Av. Callao and Av. Gral. Las Heras (the journey time is approximately 13 minutes) or by bus.
