Fortress "Three Acorns"


The fortification "Three Acorns" is located in the south-eastern part of Luxembourg . Its unusual name was given to the fortress due to the fact that each of its three towers has one acorn. In fact, the fortress is named after Adam Zygmund von Tungen, who was its commandant.

History of the fortress

The fortress "Three Acorns" is once a monumental fortification, which played an important role in medieval interstate wars. Despite the tiny size of the Luxembourg state, many historical monuments of the military past, such as the fortress "Three Acorns", have been preserved on its territory.

The fortress was built in 1732. A deep ditch was dug around its walls, therefore it was possible to get inside only through a tunnel, the length of which reached 170 meters. In 1867, the London Treaty was concluded, after which the demilitarization of Luxembourg began. According to this agreement, part of the fortification was to be dismantled. That is why from the once majestic monument there were only three fortresses bearing the name "Three acorns".

Features of the fortress

In the late nineties, a massive reconstruction of the fort "Three Acorns" began, after which it became open to the public. Near the fortress "Three Acorns" is the Museum of Modern Art, almost entirely made up of glass. The ancient fortress walls of the Three Acorns look especially majestic in the background of a modern glass building.
