Monument "The Golden Lady"

A memorial in Luxembourg called "The Golden Lady", or as it is called this "Golden Frau" monument - one of the main attractions of the country and is on Constitution Square. This monument was created in 1923 by Klaus Shito, as a tribute to all the inhabitants of Luxembourg, who voluntarily went to the front during the First World War.

History of the monument

In 1914 the German troops, which remained neutral Luxembourg, occupied German troops. Then a little less than four thousand people left their homeland and joined the ranks of an ally - the French army. Two thousand Luxembourgers were killed defending their country from the enemy. And all at that time in the country lived 260 thousand people.

All that helped the brave inhabitants of Luxembourg to defend the honor and independence of their country was concluded in the monument "Golden Lady" - a symbol of Luxembourg's independence. But the sad story that preceded the creation of the monument was a continuation. During the Second World War, the city was captured by the Germans, who in 1940 destroyed the memorial to the Golden Frau. Fortunately, some of its parts were saved. After the war, the memorial was only partially restored. In its original form, the monument was recreated only in 1985.

Memorial in our days

Now the "Golden Lady" is considered not only a symbol of the First World War, but also a sign of remembrance of all those who died during the Second World War.

The first thing that strikes everyone who sees the memorial is a huge granite obelisk 21 meters high. On top of it is a gilded statue that gave the name to the whole memorial - a woman holding a laurel wreath. This wreath, as it were, lays on the head of all Luxembourgers. Two more important details of the monument are the figures located at the foot of the obelisk. They symbolize soldiers who voluntarily left to defend the honor of the country. One of the figures lies, thus representing all the dead, the other sitting, mourning his friend and compatriot.
