After the harvest is collected and the time comes for preparing the garden and kitchen garden for wintering, the active period for gardeners begins. Correct and careful care of the currant in autumn guarantees a plentiful harvest for the next season and strong strong plants. We offer to consider a number of tips experienced dacha owners, how to care for the currant in the fall.
Care of the black currant in the fall: we learn the correct pruning
Competently trim the bushes is quite difficult. The fact is that it is possible to achieve an abundant harvest only on the condition that there are an equal number of two to three and one-year-old shoots on the bush, in which, in fact, the main quantity of fruits is concentrated. As soon as the so-called zero sprouts and shoots appear, measures should be taken immediately. How does pruning when caring for the currant in autumn:
- in the first year, when there are only two annual shoots on the bush, in autumn we pinch the growth point (we work at the very end of autumn, from each branch there should be up to five shoots);
- if the root system of the plant grows too much, the gardeners are faced with problems of a large number of trees: it is simply removed to the root (do not forget about the annual branches on last year's shoots - they pinch);
- the third year should be engaged in the so-called removal of the cap: all the dead stems without cutting regrets, this also applies to the young (this method gives an opportunity to get rid of the accumulation of diseases and pests);
- in subsequent years, care for the currant in the fall will be reduced to pinching the growth point and removing dry twigs and shoots over five years.
Fertilizer in autumn
The second stage of autumn bush preparation is fertilization. Here an integrated approach and compliance with clear deadlines and dosages. It is important to take care of the currant in the fall and on time to make the necessary elements, as this is the guarantee of the quality of the harvest. Conditionally we divide all work into three stages.
- To begin with, we introduce so-called long-lasting fertilizers. They should be understood as potassium-phosphorus. It is this top dressing responsible for the quality of berries in the next season. Experienced summer residents are advised to use ready-made concentrates in the form of granules.
- Next, we introduce chicken manure and mullein . They are added before freezing for the vegetative mass of the plant. Approximately in the course of three months the fertilizing is decomposed into simple elements and they start to act.
- In order to feed the autumn currant and at the same time mulch the soil pour a layer of ash. As a result, in the spring the land will not crack, and in winter all moisture will linger under the bush.
Addition of black currant in the fall at first glance may seem simple and simple. But there are some nuances. For example, it is not possible to make a concentrated droppings directly under the bush, as this will provoke a burn of the plant. There is too much nitrogen. This also applies to the mullein: it is also introduced about 25 cm from the lowest branches.
Fertilizer of currant
The last point in caring for the currant in the fall is the bending of the bush. The method you choose is convenient for you (to assemble a bush into a bundle or use a rod), but it is necessary to do this. This stage is done only in a period when the circulation of juice in the branches is large, otherwise the stems will simply break. If everything is done correctly, even a small layer of snow will safely protect the bush from frosts reliably and save it until the spring.
