Volcano Poas National Park

General characteristics

The Poas Volcano National Park is one of the most visited natural sites in Costa Rica . Officially it was opened on January 25, 1971, when 65 square kilometers of territory around the eponymous volcano was recognized as a nature protection zone. The Poas volcano is located at an altitude of 2,708 meters above sea level and includes three craters:

The mouth of Botos is remarkable because it is a lake with green water. It was formed as a result of the accumulation of rainwater at the bottom of the crater. On one of the slopes of the Poas volcano, one of the most picturesque waterfalls of Costa Rica - La Paz - hid.

Flora and fauna

The territory of the National Park Poas volcano in Costa Rica is fertile, so here you can easily grow such rare plant species as magnolia and orchid. In the park grows a large number of tropical trees that have become habitat for hummingbirds, Graybirds, Toucans, Quetzalis and Flycatchers. Among the animals on the territory of the reserve you can find awkward armadillos, gray mountain squirrels, skunks, coyotes and many other mammals.

For tourists of the national park near the Poas volcano there is an observation deck where you can carefully consider the movement of lava and haze from the volcano, admire the beauties of the Central Plateau and the green lake in the Botos crater. There is also a souvenir shop and an auditorium, where presentations are held on weekends.

How to get there?

Poas Volcano is one of the most beautiful national parks of Costa Rica , it is located in the central part of the country about 50 km from its capital - the city of San Jose . You can reach it by excursion bus or car, following the Autopista Gral Cañas road, Ruta Nacional 712 or the route number 126. It is best to visit it in the early morning, when the clouds do not interfere with normal viewing of the natural landscapes of the Poas volcano.
