Stenting the ureter

The need for a procedure for stenting the ureter occurs often in cases where a woman develops a urolithiasis or has a tumor-like process in the urinary system. This manipulation involves the introduction of a thin flexible tubule into the ureter's lumen. As a result, the patency is restored, and the urine formed in the kidneys can freely enter the bladder.

How is manipulation performed?

For stenting the ureter use a whole set of tools. The central place in it is occupied by the stent itself. Its length can vary from 12 to 39 cm, and the diameter from 1.5 to 6 mm. To conduct ureteral stenting, women use a shorter length and diameter, based on the anatomical features of the structure of the genitourinary system.

Both ends of this device have rounded tips, which allows the stent to firmer inside the bladder and excludes the possibility of migration. The installation process is carried out with the help of a cystoscope and controlled by video equipment.

What are the possible consequences of stenting the ureter?

In some cases, almost immediately after stent placement, patients complain of painful urination, frequent urges, which are often accompanied by difficulties during the process of urination.

The appearance of blood impurities in the urine after this procedure indicates the fact that during the manipulation the mucous membrane of the ureter or the bladder itself was injured. This situation requires medical intervention and the appointment of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Among the possible complications of stenting of the ureter, vesico-ureter reflux should be mentioned. With such a violation, there is a reverse outflow through the urine stent from the bladder. As a result, the probability of kidney infection increases, which may result in the development of pyelonephritis.

With prolonged stenting of the ureter, incrustation is possible, eventually leading to the destruction of the stent. It is connected with the fact that none of the existing such devices today can not withstand the impact of urine on it. With the development of this disorder, the likelihood of developing complications such as erosion of the ureter, fistula formation, is very small.

How to avoid complications?

Nutrition for stenting the ureter involves the inclusion in the diet of plant products, a large amount of fluid. As the latter, it is best to use ordinary water, the volume of which should be at least 2 liters.

Thus doctors recommend to exclude the use of salty and smoked products.
