The largest flower in the world

Flowers are created to please your beauty and exquisite smell, but there are flowers that you can hardly give to someone. This refers to the largest colors in the world - giant colors. These colors can only surprise - and their size, and their unusual smell.

From this article you will learn what is called the largest flower blossoming on our planet Earth.

Of all the flowering plants, for their huge size, the two largest flowers in the world stand out: the width and weight are Rafflesia arnoldii and the height is Amorphophallus Titanium. With which we will get acquainted in the article more closely.

Rafflesia Arnoldi

This amazing flower, growing on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, got its name from the names of scientists who discovered it - TS. Raffles and D. Arnoldi. The local population calls it "lotus flower" or "cadaverous lily". While it is known about the existence of only twelve species of rafflesia.

Rafflesia has a very unusual structure: it has no trunk, roots and green leaves, it does not independently synthesize organic substances necessary for life. Therefore, it parasitizes the damaged roots and stems of lianas, releasing threads that are similar to mycelium, penetrating into the tissues of the host plant, but not causing any harm to it. With a flower weight of more than 10 kg, a diameter of about 1 meter, petals 3 cm thick and 46 cm long, the seeds of the rafflesia are very small, it is almost impossible to see them.

The process of the appearance of the flower is very long: a year and a half swells from the seed of the kidney, and then ripens 9 months in the bud, which dissolves only for 3-4 days. The very flower of Rafflesia is bright red with white outgrowth, but for all its beauty it has the smell of rotting meat, to attract a large number of insects.

At the end of flowering, the rafflesia decomposes and turns into a shapeless black mass that sticks to the hoofs of large animals, thus ensuring the transfer of seeds to a new location.

Local people appreciate this flower and consider that rafflesia positively influences sexual function and helps to restore the figure of a woman after childbirth.

Amorphophallus Titanium or Titanic

This largest flower in the world was also discovered on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, but after the arrival there people were almost completely destroyed, so you can admire its impressive size in the botanical gardens of the world.

The plant itself grows from a huge tuber and is a short and thick stem, at the base of which is a single matte-green leaf with white transverse stripes 10 cm thick, up to 3 m long and 1 m in diameter, and above it are smaller leaves.

Before blooming, and this occurs once every 5-8 years, amorphophallus discards this leaf and it has a rest period (about 4 months). And then there is a flower 2.5 to 3 meters high: a yellow cob, consisting of female (in the lower part), male flowers (middle part) and neutral flowers (at the end), wrapped in burgundy-green cloak - a veil. During flowering, which lasts only two days, the upper part of the cob is heated to 40 ° C and begins to exude an "aroma": a mixture of smells of rotten eggs, meat and fish, so locals call it "cadaverous flower". This amazing plant lives up to 40 years.

Cultivation of this unusual flower in the botanical gardens, causes a lot of excitement among tourists, as many want to, not visiting the tropics of Indonesia, to find out what the flower is called the largest and smelly in the whole world.

If you get home such flowers-giants you are unlikely to succeed, then you will be able to surprise the guests with plants with predators or even "living stones" .
