Single-horned uterus

Of the often encountered malformations of the uterus, which are detected on ultrasound, remains a one-horned uterus with a rudimentary horn or without it.

What is a horny uterus?

The unicorn uterus is half the usual uterus with one fallopian tube with no second horn and tube. With the normal patency of the second tube and the operation of the ovary, pregnancy, if a woman has a unicorn uterus, it is quite possible. But the danger lies in the development of ectopic pregnancy in the rudimentary horn (when communicating with the cavity of the main horn), which should be taken into account in IVF.

The unicorn uterus can cause a habitual miscarriage due to the weakness of its walls and the bottom, especially if the second horn is also insufficiently developed. But the diagnosis of the unicorn uterus can cause difficulties or not be detected, despite the possibility of examination and bright symptoms. To suspect a unicorn uterus is possible on the following symptoms:

Diagnosis of a single-horny uterus

To diagnose a single-horny uterus, a woman uses ultrasound, which reveals the absence of one horn and a fallopian tube, an irregular shape of the uterus with an absent bottom. With hysteroscopy, the absence of the mouth of one of the fallopian tubes is revealed. For diagnosis and treatment of the one-horny uterus, laparoscopy is also used.

Surgical correction for the one-horned uterus

If, with a single-horned uterus, there is a rudimentary second horn, then for the prevention of endometriosis and the development of ectopic pregnancy in it, it is recommended to remove it together with an underdeveloped fallopian tube, even if there is no endometrium in it. Such surgical intervention is more often performed with the help of laparoscopy with simultaneous hysteroscopy. Sharing is used when there is an extensive adhesive process in the small pelvis.
