National Gallery of Slovenia

History of creation and architecture

The National Gallery was founded after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the creation of a separate Kingdom of Slovenes. In 1918 for her was the palace of Cresia Ljubljana, but a year later the museum moved to a new place.

The modern building, which houses the National Gallery of Slovenia, is located in the city center. It was built in 1896 by the order of the mayor Ivan Khribar, who sought to make Ljubljana the most beautiful of the country's settlements. The project was designed by the Czech architect Frantisek Scarbrot. First, the building housed the cultural center "People's Center", and the National Gallery was located near the park of Trivoli .

The building was completed with a new building in the early 1990s, and its creator was already the Slovenian architect Edward Ravnikar. On this change was not completed, in 2001 appeared a large glass gallery, connecting the two wings. The authors of the innovation are Yuri Sadar and Bostiana Vuga. The architecture of the building strikes the imagination with its beauty, majesty and fully corresponds to the collection of paintings stored inside.

Expositions of the National Gallery

In the museum are collected paintings of different styles and genre directions, written by Slovenian and European artists. The collection was replenished for 400 years, and therefore became the largest in the country. Among the presented paintings are written in the 16th century, as well as the works of modern masters. The gallery is closed only on Mondays and on public holidays. The rest of the time can be seen from 10:00 to 18:00, buying a ticket for 5 € for a periodic exhibition and 7 € for a permanent exhibition. Discounts apply to pensioners, children and students. For tourists, regular exhibitions are organized under the guidance of an experienced guide. The museum has a store where you can buy replicas, postcards, goods for children and even jewelry.

The National Gallery of Slovenia is located on Presernoya street, 20, practically in the center of the city, so you can visit it by visiting other sights of the capital. From other parts of the city you can reach it by public transport.
