Ljubljana Town Hall - description
At the moment, being in the center of Slovenia , tourists will be able to see the Ljubljana Town Hall, which is known as the city municipality. The history of the creation of this unique structure includes the use of several styles:
- The first version of the building was erected in the Gothic style, which was a reflection of the cultural traditions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire;
- Later, in the XVII - XVIII centuries, the capital of Slovenia overflowed the architectural style of the Baroque. For the construction of buildings, which still adorn the Old City to this day, well-known architects from Italy were invited. Their efforts were erected buildings, thanks to which Ljubljana received the title of the Eastern European Baroque capital. All the buildings had to fit organically into the general style, so the Ljubljana Town Hall underwent a restructuring and acquired features characteristic of the Baroque.
Merit in the construction of the building, the image of which can be seen today, belongs to Gregor Machek, but at the same time he took as a basis the projects of another architect, Carlo Martinuzzi. At the same time, Maceche used his special ideas, which enabled the town hall to acquire its own unique style. This is expressed in the following features:
- application for decoration of decor elements in the style of sgraffito, famous for its technique, allowing to preserve the finish in its original form after a very long period of time;
- as the ornaments of the facade are mythological sculptures;
- on the facade is also located and a map of Ljubljana XVII century.
What else is interesting about the town hall?
In the immediate vicinity of the Ljubljana City Hall, in front of it is another architectural monument, always attracting the attention of tourists. It is a fountain of Carniola rivers , the merit in the creation of which belongs to the architect Francesco Robb, who was invited from Venice in the XVIII century. The fountain features such characteristic features:
- a base in the form of a trefoil, which embodies the ancient seal of Ljubljana;
- around the fountain are statues that depict the three rivers of the capital - Ljubljanica , Sava and Krk. Their peculiarity is that the statues are made in the form of men, this is a consequence of the fact that Robba did not know that in Slovene the word "river" of the feminine gender.
Another architectural work by Francesco Robba is the Narcissa Fountain, located in the inner courtyard of the town hall.
