The term "double standards" is widely known in such fields of science as political science, journalism, economics, social studies. In English, he appeared in the middle of the nineteenth century, they were labeled unequal moral requirements for men and women. In Russian, he denoted racial and class inequality under capitalism.
What are double standards?
Double standards are a difference in the evaluation of similar or identical actions that have been committed by different people. For example, some people judge others with prejudice and allow a personal negative attitude towards individuals to influence their assessment of their actions. Such a phenomenon affects all spheres of social life, one of the people considers the double different standards immoral, others say that without them any social relations can not exist, and others completely deny the existence of double standards.
Double Standards - Psychology
In psychology, double standards are the cause of the stratification of society, the emergence of a huge amount of hypocrisy and lies. In general, such behavior can be characterized as " I can do something that can not be different, and everything that they are allowed to do is possible ." A person living by such standards, tries to adjust simultaneously to several people, trying to please them. This double morality contributes to the creation of a contradictory opinion within a person and double standards of behavior.
One can give an example of a person living by such standards: " I can steal, because I need a car and an apartment, but if they steal from me, it must be punishable ." Those funds that were selected from others according to this principle will not make a person happy. What are double standards of behavior?
In life, people have different standards. So, for example, if in a kindergarten or school the child behaves politely and circumspectly towards the people around him, then in the family circle he allows himself to be rude and tactless. And then the question arises: what does double standards mean, why are such different behaviors developed? A child at the age of six already consciously understands the difference between behavior in people and at home and builds his morals with double standards.
This behavior is repeated in adulthood and occurs for several reasons:
- a house is a place where a child can feel free, where there is no need to follow some generally accepted norms of behavior;
- after six years of age, the child's character and behavior change, this extraordinary behavior looks like a protest and an unwillingness to follow the instructions of the parents;
- cause can serve as a transitional age;
- the child adopts the standards of behavior from adults, if your family is rude and disrespectful, then the child in relation to you will behave the same way.
Double Standards in Relationships
Stereotypes between men and women have existed for a long time, but this carries no danger until a person begins to live by them and think not by their own head, but by someone else's. There are many examples of what are the double standards in the relationship:
- Everyone is accustomed to the fact that a man, when acquainted with a woman, must necessarily take the first step, otherwise he will be considered as notorious.
- A woman should be clean and tidy and she does not forgive what is forgivable for a man.
- A man is not allowed to beat a woman, but a woman allows herself to raise her hand on her companion, justifying this situation by the fact that she is weaker.
- It is generally accepted that friendship between people of different sex does not happen, unless a man is a representative of a sexual minority. Although this stereotype is wrong.
- A rich sexual experience in men is considered the norm, a woman with the same experience will be called a libertine.
Double Standards in Education
The system of double standards did not ignore educational processes. Here are a few vivid examples.
- You can hear a lot about the need to remove children from the streets and carry away something useful, but at the same time, sections and circles are closed, and at best they are transferred from the category of free to paid ones. Moreover, the powers that be make the directors force their parents to pay for these very circles and attend them on a mandatory basis.
- Speaking teachers' salaries, they take the highest, where the category, incentive payments and other allowances are taken into account, but in fact, 90% receive much less than the sums announced. Along with this, they are talking about attracting young specialists, but they create conditions that few people agree to.
- The state allocating finance for, for example, the alarm system, which is necessary for the school to be accepted for the new academic year, does not finance related repair work and recommends schools to seek money "on the side". The directors start asking for help from their parents, but as soon as any dissatisfied parent writes a complaint, they wave off in the same organization that recommended finding money on their own, speaking about the illegality of such actions and promising to punish the perpetrators.
- At conferences it is very often possible to see figures that show positive tendencies in equipping schools with multimedia devices, giving it out for the state's achievements, but in 80% of cases all this equipment was bought for the money of attracted sponsors, patrons and all the same parents of students.
Double standards in human rights
In any human society there is a principle of double standards. Among us there will always be people who will consider that they can be more than the rest. Female double standards lead to disagreements in the pair, cause injustice. And if equality exists between people, then only as a theory. In fact, a man has more responsibilities than a woman:
- If a man is obliged to serve the army and sacrifice himself during the war, then the woman does not bear any obligations to the state, her civil rights are not limited.
- The pension for men is calculated after sixty years. The average life expectancy is minus one and a half years, that is, most men have practically no right to a pension. Women receive a pension after reaching 55 years. After that, she lives an average of 15 more years.
- Reproductive rights, the right to control the expenditure of children's alimentary funds, the choice of paternity for men, unlike women, is absent.
Double standards in the economy
In Russia, for a long time, there is such a thing as "lawlessness", which means a massive violation of rules without consequences for violators. In this case, the practice of double standards divides Russia into two parts:
- a sub-elite stratum consisting of the ruling elite;
- the middle proto-layer and the lower layer.
This double morality in society contributes to the deformation of consciousness, causes in people the desire to fall into the category of the elect, who have more favorable conditions for life. Over time, the causes and methods of applying double standards can change: discriminatory tariffs and fees, visa restrictions, blocking of financial assets.
Double Standards in Politics
The policy of double standards is a contradictory, ambivalent policy, different principles, laws, rules regarding the subjects depending on their loyalty and benefit considerations. That is, when assessing the account does not take the real facts and facts, the main role in this case is the ratio of the appraiser to the estimated. The actions of "their own" are justified, and the actions of "strangers" are condemned and considered unacceptable.

Many people think that there are no double standards in the spiritual life, but this is not so.
