Isthmiko-cervical insufficiency during pregnancy

Isthmicocervical insufficiency (ICI), which occurs during pregnancy, is a violation of this kind, in which there is a change in the normal functioning of the isthmus and uterine neck. This phenomenon leads to the development of spontaneous abortion in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.

In this case, the cervix as it begins to thin out, becomes soft and supple, which is easily determined by gynecological examination. At the same time, there is a shortening and opening of the cervical canal, which provokes the possibility of miscarriage.

How is the violation manifested?

Diagnosis of this phenomenon is difficult, because when pregnancy symptoms of ischemic-cervical insufficiency (ICS) are hidden. A woman can find out about her presence only with the next passage of a gynecological examination.

In rare cases, mainly in the development of complications, the same symptoms can be observed at short gestation periods, as in the case of a threat of miscarriage: spotting, spotting the discharge, pulling the pain in the lower abdomen, feeling of vomiting into the vagina.

How is the diagnosis of ICI?

Diagnosis of isthmico-cervical insufficiency, the symptoms of which are almost always hidden during pregnancy, is based on ultrasound data. On the presence of a violation, the doctor can assume and when examining the cervix. During the evaluation, the diameter and length of the channel itself are measured.

How is the disease treated?

Treatment of ischemic-cervical insufficiency, which developed during pregnancy, is carried out by 3 basic methods, the choice of which is carried out depending on the cause that led to the violation.

With functional ICI (occurs when hormonal failure) hormone therapy is prescribed. Its duration is on average 1-2 weeks. In the case where the disorder did not lend itself to hormone correction, a pessary is placed.

The third method of treatment of the disorder is of a radical nature - surgical intervention. Supposes the imposition of a suture on the cervix, resulting in the formation of an artificial isthmus. Suture removal is performed at 37-38 week of pregnancy.
