How to hide thuja for the winter?

Landscape designers like to work with tuya. This popular coniferous plant is characterized by rapid growth. But for this, you need to take care of the tuja, especially in the first years after planting.

If the tree is planted in the spring , then it will have time to adapt after the transplant. On its roots grow small roots, absorbing nutrients from the soil. In the autumn planting such root hairs will not have time to grow, and the tree will be more difficult to take root. In early spring, when the sun begins to warm, the needles intensively evaporate moisture, but little comes from the earth. Thuii seedlings start to "burn up". To prevent this from happening, a green beauty must necessarily be covered. Let's find out what preparation should be for the forthcoming winter and how to properly cover the tree for the winter.

Preparing for winter

Tuya is a frost-resistant plant. It feels great even at -30 ° C. However, young trees can get severe burns from the bright winter sun. In order to keep it in the winter, late autumn, as a rule, even before the snow falls, it is necessary to cover the seedlings. This should be done at least the first two years after planting, when the trees are still very fragile and tender. And if the winter has turned out frosty and sunny, then even grown trees can suffer. Therefore, they can be shaded from the sunny side by a fine grid.

There are several options for sheltering thuja for the winter.

  1. Shelter with gauze or light burlap. Some gardeners do not recommend using a non-woven material for this purpose, for example, spandbond or lutrasil. It is believed that such materials do not allow air to pass through, moisture will collect under them, and this, in turn, threatens to expel the plant during the thaw. Gauze fabric should be cut into canvases equal in length to the distance from the soil to the highest branch in the crown. Gently fix the gauze first on the crown, and then at the base of the tree. The next piece of gauze should be stapled with the previous one. It will take several pieces of fabric to cover the entire tree. Do not tighten the gauze strongly, because when it gets wet it will shrink. At the base of the Tui, for the same reason, do not tighten the shelter too tightly.
  2. Shelter is more difficult, which can be done by a professional. First, a wooden frame must be installed around each tree of the tree. Then a light material is stretched around the frame to protect the tree from the sun. Remember that you must handle tuya carefully, do not stretch and do not injure the branches of the tree.
  3. The simplest variant of tuja shelter for the winter is to install wooden shields near the saplings from the sunny side, which will shade the young plants from bright sun rays.
  4. In specialized stores you can purchase a ready-made design in order to keep the Tui in winter properly.

In winter, snow will accumulate on any of the shelter types, so caring for thui in winter will consist in constant shaking. If this is not done, in the spring heavy melting snow can break fragile twigs.

Some mistakenly believe that, when clearing snow from the tracks, it is better to throw it on plants, including on thujas. However, this can not be done: under a lot of snow, the needles of a tree may begin to rot.

Remove winter shelters in the spring, after the earth is thrown back. In addition, to "undress" thuju better on a cloudy day, so that there is not a sharp drop in sunlight and young trees of thuya gradually adjust to another light regime.

Now, having figured out how to shelter thuys for the winter, you can protect the garden from various adverse environmental influences and thereby preserve its harmony and beauty.
