Cervix in early pregnancy

The cervix in the early stages of pregnancy, like other organs of the reproductive system, undergoes certain changes. In most cases, it is the change in the condition of the cervix that indicates the onset of pregnancy.

How does the cervix change with the onset of pregnancy?

To begin with, it is necessary to say that the cervix is that part of it that is located directly in the lower part and connects the vagina and the uterine cavity with each other. Normally, non-pregnant women have a length of 4 cm and a diameter of 2.5 cm. When examined in a gynecological chair, the doctor observes only the vaginal part of the cervix, which is normally firm and begins to change already in the early stages of pregnancy.

When examining a pregnant woman in the early stages of pregnancy, the doctor, first of all, assesses the condition of the cervix, which undergoes the following changes.

First, the color of its mucous membrane changes from gently pink to bluish. This is due to increased uterine blood flow, which is accompanied by the proliferation of blood vessels and an increase in their number.

After evaluating the color in the early stages of pregnancy, the physician decides to determine the position of the cervix. Under the influence of the hormone of pregnancy (progesterone), its lowering takes place, which prevents the development of spontaneous abortion.

Separately, it is necessary to say about what consistency the uterine neck has. So, in the early stages of pregnancy, the cervix becomes soft. In this case, its channel decreases with time in the lumen, because in the initial stage of pregnancy, there is an increase in the production of cervical mucus, which prevents the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms into the uterine cavity.

Already closer to the end of pregnancy, 35-37 weeks, the uterus begins to prepare for childbirth, and becomes, as they say, loose. If in the early stages of pregnancy the cervix is friable, doctors place the pregnant woman under constant monitoring, because there is a threat of interruption.
