Archaeological Museum

The Macedonian Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest museums in Skopje and all of Macedonia . It features a huge, interesting and informative collection that includes several thousand exhibits in the form of works of art, objects of history of different countries and even miniature models of the cities of Macedonia. Unfortunately, you can not take photos of the exhibits, so we recommend that you spend at least a few hours in the museum in order to have time to look at everything and remember for a long time. The museum itself is next to the river and one of the ways to its building is the bridge through it, on which there is a large number of beautiful statues, as well as in the whole city center. By the way, near it is the Stone Bridge , which is also an important landmark of the country .

A bit of history

The Macedonian Archaeological Museum in Skopje was founded in 1924 and is located on the territory of the Kurshumli-Khan Inn. July 26, 1963 in Skopje, an earthquake occurred, due to which the yard was destroyed, but later restored, and now looks perfect, as before. At one time, the process of its creation was made by the merger of three museums (archaeological, historical and ethnographic), which made it the main repository of the history of Macedonia and its cultural memory.

Exposition of the museum

The exhibition hall of the museum is large enough that it can accommodate a huge number of exhibits and replenish with new findings every year, and all because the total area of the museum building is several thousand square meters. In addition to its main activities, the staff of the museum conducts scientific research, which makes this place more solid, for here the brightest minds of Macedonia are working.

Exhibitions in the museum are divided into thematic blocks. If you take as an example the historical hall, then it presents a large collection of cultural heritage, which came to us from antiquity. Almost every exhibit in the collection was found during the archaeological excavations of the ancient city of Skupje, which was located in the territory of Skopje, but there are also exhibits from other countries. On the tour you can see a considerable exhibition of coins, ceramic dishes, objects used in everyday life and armament. All exhibits are exhibited in the order of the chronology and have the name "Walk through the past".

Another part of the museum is an ethnographic block in which tourists can look at national outfits, as well as see examples of how the houses were built many centuries ago, which gives an idea of how earlier people lived in these parts. Separately it is worth mentioning the artistic part of the block, which presents old paintings and icons, among which there is the oldest exhibit of the museum - an icon from clay dating from the 6th century. Such finds of archaeologists are peculiar only to the territories of Tunisia and Macedonia.

Visitors to the museum can buy their favorite exhibits, but not originals, unfortunately. The museum makes and sells copies of the finds they have, so you can buy a souvenir and bring home as a gift (with the exception of statues, of course). Separately it is worth noting the library of the museum, which collected a variety of literature on the theme of culture and the history of its homeland.
