A stone bridge

The stone bridge Skopje is an ornament of the capital of Macedonia . It is so valuable to the city that its image is placed on the city flag of Skopje. It lies between the new and the old part of the city, so a large number of tourists pass through it daily. They are attracted by an amazing historical sight - the restoration of the old guardhouse, which was built at the highest point of the stone bridge. This building is no less interesting than the bridge itself, especially since the history did not preserve the exact date of the construction of the structure, it is known only that the bridge was erected in the second half of the 15th century, when the Ottoman Empire rules.

Architecture

The bridge, like a photo album of history: from all its sides, in various ways, important events and no less important personalities are depicted. So, on one side of the bridge you can see the heroes of the Macedonian resistance, and on the other - the monuments of Cyril and Methodius, known throughout the world. In the middle of the bridge there is a memorial stone dedicated to the leader of the peasant uprising of Karpos. His death was tragic and at the hands of his enemies, the Turks threw him into the Vardar River, over which a bridge was built. The structure is decorated with decorative elements of Islamic sacral and secular architecture. Thus, one bridge is a monument to several important events.

The bridge is very powerful, since large stone blocks were chosen for its construction, columns of the same material support them. It is difficult to imagine how difficult it was at that time without modern technology to assemble a mosaic like a huge bridge of large heavy boulders, which, moreover, needed to be shaped in the right way. Historians know that the bridge was built under the leadership of Emperor Justinian, so the project was so carefully thought out that the bridge even has grooves for loopholes. But there is a legend that refutes the fact that it was the emperor who watched the erection. In it an honorable role is assigned to Sultan Mehmed II.

But, unfortunately, even a well thought out project could not help the bridge survive the earthquake that destroyed it. The bridge of a long 214 meters and a height of 6 meters began to collapse: the stone blocks began to split, and the columns were not so stable. After a number of restoration measures, it has acquired a pristine appearance, which pleases all visitors to the city.
