Watch Tower of Saat-Kula

Macedonia . Skopje is a city full of interesting places, cozy alleys, fascinating architecture. And among all this diversity it is simply impossible not to single out the clock tower of Saat Kula. The history of this structure began in the 16th century, in 1566, which gives grounds to call it perhaps the oldest tower and an important attraction of Macedonia .

The design and history of the tower

The tower has a hexagonal foundation and a very interesting roof, the clockwork itself was brought from Hungary. Originally the construction of the structure consisted entirely of wood. Now the frame is laid out of red brick, and the length of the tower is about 40 m. The tower of Saat-Kula is also considered one of the highest towers not only of Macedonia, but also of the Balkan Peninsula.

At least twice the tower suffered from external influences. In 1689, a significant harm to the then wooden structure caused a fire. In 1904, the tower was rebuilt, but in 1963 the structure was again severely damaged by the earthquake. In this case, even the mechanism itself had to be repaired, where it was stolen. A new clockwork was delivered directly from Switzerland, in fact, it still works today.

What is interesting about the clock tower of Saat-Kula?

The battle of the clock from the tower of Saat-Kula was carried for many kilometers around. It was believed that its main task was to inform about the beginning of daily prayers, and also to warn Christians, so that during prayer they stopped trading on the square near the clock. Now this is one of the highlights of the city and an unchanging landmark that is noticeable both for tourists and for the citizens themselves. Experienced travelers argue that with a huge desire and availability of about a hundred dinars you can climb the tower. But at the same time it is worth considering that the steps of the tower are wooden, creaking, and this can be a very dangerous pastime. In addition, the interior is rather dirty.

How to get there?

The clock tower of Saat-Kula is in the midst of a very confusing area with narrow streets. Therefore, it can be very difficult to find it, even though it is visible from everywhere. And although this area is rather "meager" to the sights, it is worth noting that the nearby is the Sultan Mudara mosque, as well as the nearby University of Cyril and Methodius.
