Area and monument of sexual diversity


The square and monument of sexual diversity is a monument in Uruguay , in the capital of the state, the city of Montevideo . It is located in a small alley of the Old Police, almost at the intersection of Bartolome Miter and Sarandi Streets.

Montevideo is the first city in Latin America and the fifth in the world, which by creating a square and a monument in observance of gender justice and the memory of homosexual victims of Nazism. The monument was opened on February 2, 2005. The ceremony was attended by Mayor of Montevideo Mariano Arana, as well as Uruguayan writer, journalist and politician Eduardo Galeano.

Appearance of the monument

The monument was erected in honor of the victims of the persecution on the basis of sexual orientation. This is what determined its appearance: the monument is a low (about 1 m) stela with a truncated tip that looks like an isosceles triangle. It is made of pink granite with black veins and symbolizes those pink and black triangles, which in Nazi concentration camps were sewn on clothes for lesbians and gays.

The inscription on the triangle reads: "Veneration of diversity is the reverence of life. Montevideo - for respect for all types of gender identity and sexual orientation. "

How to get to the square?

The area of ​​sexual diversity is almost in the center of Montevideo - near Independence Square , the Cathedral and the gates of an ancient fortress. You can get there by taxi - they are considered to be public transport in the city. The car will most conveniently travel by Cerro Largo or the Canelones.
