Gurvich Museum


In the historic center of Montevideo , in the Constitution building, there is a famous city landmark - the Gurvich Museum, whose exposition is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Uruguayan artist Jose Gurvich.

How was the museum created?

In 2001, the non-profit Center Jose Gurvich was established, which proposed the creation of a museum. The founders of the museum invested their own money into this business, and also transferred books, sculptures, illustrations and other art objects to its fund, which served as the basis for the exposition. The museum started its work on October 14, 2005.

Exposition

The museum building has 3 floors. At the first, temporary exhibitions organized by the Gurvich Foundation are held. The second and third floors are occupied by a permanent exposition, which acquaints visitors with the work of this famous Uruguayan artist. Here you can see the collection, which until the opening of the museum for 30 years was stored in the artist's family: his paintings painted in oil, pencil and other sketches, sculptures.

There is a library at the museum. It is also used for various scientific seminars and conferences, concerts and other cultural events.

How to visit the museum?

The Gurvich Museum is located in the Old Town , next to the cathedral. You can get here by all means of transport going to the historic center of Montevideo (to the stop Cerrito esq. Pérez Castellano).

The museum is open from Monday to Saturday. The cost of the visit is $ 3.5, but on Tuesdays the entrance is free. Having bought a single ticket (it costs about $ 7), you can visit not only the Gurvich Museum, but also the Torres Garcia Museum , and the Carnival Museum .
