The Torres Garcia Museum

Montevideo is one of the most beautiful cities in Uruguay and, like the capital, an important cultural center of the country. Most of the most interesting sights are located right here. So, in the heart of the historical district of Ciudad Vieja is the unique Torres Garcia museum. Let's talk more about it.

History of the museum

Joaquin Torres-Garcia - an outstanding Uruguayan artist, known in his homeland as one of the main representatives of Cubism and abstractionism. After the death of the creator in 1949, his relatives and the widow of Manolita Pigna de Rubies decide to found the artist of the museum in his hometown in memory of him. The opening ceremony took place on July 28, 1955.

For 20 years, the Torres Garcia Museum was in the former mastermind of the creator, but in 1975 it was closed due to the beginning of the military dictatorship in Uruguay. The reopening took place in 1990 already in a new location, in a building located in the central part of Ciudad Vieja.

What is interesting about the museum?

The Torres Garcia Museum is housed in a 7-storey Art Deco building. The appearance of the structure, at first glance, is not noticeable, but such brevity and lack of bright details are the main characteristics of this direction. Curious and the layout of the building:

  1. On the ground floor there is a small library and a store of decorative goods and handicrafts by local craftsmen.
  2. The underground floor was reserved for the theater museum, where interesting educational lectures and seminars are held regularly for everyone.
  3. On the 1-3 floors there is the museum itself, broken, respectively, into 3 thematic halls.
  4. The upper floors of the building are used as art workshops.

The museum of Torres Garcia stores not only paintings and drawings of the famous artist, but also original works, archives and pieces of furniture created by him, as well as numerous photographs and publications related to the creativity and activity of the creator.
