X-ray of the stomach with barium - consequences

X-ray is one of the most common methods of diagnosis. However, when examining hollow organs, it is difficult to obtain a detailed picture and outlines of all folds. Therefore, the radiograph of the stomach and intestine is usually carried out with a contrast medium that is not absorbed into the digestive tract and reflects X-ray radiation. This allows you to get a fairly clear picture, to study the relief and shape of the organ, to reveal additional shadows in the gaps of hollow organs. As a contrast medium, barium salts are usually used in such studies.

The effects of x-ray of the stomach with barium

The dose of irradiation obtained during the X-ray with barium does not exceed the dose for a conventional X-ray study and is not capable of causing harm. But, as in any other case, X-rays are not recommended to be performed more than twice a year.

The main unpleasant consequence of the use of barium for the X-ray of the stomach and intestines is the frequent occurrence of constipation after its application.
