The Gate of the Holy Cross


Gates of the Holy Cross - one of the oldest sights of Bruges , because they were erected in the distant 14th century and represented a protective structure. It is a powerful triumphal arch with flags and small towers.

In the Middle Ages, this Belgian city was protected by several fortifications. The Gate of the Holy Cross is one of them. True, until our time in Bruges , only the moat and, in fact, the gate, have been preserved, but the walls were destroyed as early as the 19th century. It is interesting that among the tourists there is a certain belief: if three times pass under this structure, then soon the most cherished desire will come true. True, this or another fiction guides - is unclear, but, you see, it's worth trying.

By the way, earlier the military, passing through the gate, read a prayer to the Almighty. It was believed that this was some kind of request for a blessing. It is worth mentioning that near this Belgian landmark there are windmills. Of the 20 preserved three, while still functioning. So, one is called "Bon-Cher" and it was built in 1915, the second - "St. Janus" (the building of 1780), and the third is called "De Neve Papagei" (1970).
