Tallinn City Museum

History and exposition of the museum

Tallinn City Museum was founded in 1937. In 1963 he moved to the street. Vienna, in a restored historical building of the XV century. By 2000 the museum was reconstructed and reopened the doors to visitors.

The permanent exposition of the museum tells the story of Tallinn from the 13th to the end of the 20th century. The name of the exposition - "The city that will never be completed" - reflects the idea that the history of Tallinn continues to develop before our eyes. The collection consists of household items, dishes, interior details. Pictures and ancient engravings clearly represent the life of a medieval city. The museum presents a model of the city in 1885. Many exhibits are allowed to touch, which is unusual for the museum.

The exhibition of the ceramics fund, awarded as the best work of curators of museum funds in Estonia, has more than 2,000 articles of faience and porcelain made in Estonia, Europe and East Asia.

Branches of the museum

The Tallinn City Museum has 9 branches located in the Old Town, Kadriorg Park and other areas of the city.

  1. Tower Kik-in-de-Kök . The tower in the Old Town is part of the medieval fortification system of Tallinn. The name of the tower translates as "look into the kitchen" - it was given to the tower because from it literally it was possible to see what was happening in the kitchens of city houses. Now in the tower there are expositions telling about the history of the defensive structures of Tallinn, as well as crimes committed in the city in the Middle Ages.
  2. The tower of Neitsitorn . In the "Maiden" tower, which was once part of the defensive structures, now there is a museum-cafe. They cook here according to old recipes.
  3. Children's Museum in Kadriorg . In a museum for children, small visitors can play, get acquainted with old trades, learn to protect nature.
  4. Children's Museum in Kalamai . Another children's museum introduces the history of toys and children's games from the Middle Ages to the present day. With the exhibits you can play!
  5. Museum of Photography . Museum in the building of the city prison of the XIV century. introduces the history of art photography. On the second floor of the museum there are photographic equipment.
  6. The house-museum of Peter the Great . "Small Imperial Palace" keeps a collection of works of art and household items that surrounded Peter I and Catherine I when they visited Tallinn.
  7. Tallinn Russian Museum . The museum introduces the Russian part of Tallinn's life - the way of life and culture of the Russian-speaking population of the Estonian capital.
  8. Museum of carved stones . The exposition of the museum features stones with decorative ornaments that once adorned the buildings of Old Tallinn.
