Styxgråden

What is interesting about Stifsgården?

The building of the residence was built in the XVIII century as a private domain. There are more than 100 rooms here. In 1800 the house was sold to the state, and the governor settled there. When the King visited Trondheim, he stayed in this house. In the 19th century, Stifsgården was used mainly in connection with the royal coronation, as traditionally Norwegian kings were crowned in the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Since 1906 Stifsgården is the official royal residence, and the governor of the district and the district court that was stationed there before left the building.

Architecture

Stifsgården is one of the best examples of Norwegian architecture. Style reflects the transition from rococo to neoclassicism. The facade has a simple, clear shape with rococo elements. The building consists of a main wing and two side wings, built of logs with a notch and plastered. This is the largest wooden building in Europe. Its appearance remained unchanged from the day of construction. In the interior, the changes made during the 19th century in connection with coronations are noticeable. The last restoration was carried out in 1997.

The interior has changed, and yet few original features are still present. On the ceilings and in the niches there is a rococo stucco. The panels are decorated with landscapes. In the dining room you can see pictures of urban landscapes, made on the motives of English copper engravings. In the ballroom, the ceiling and walls were painted as far back as 1847. The interior of the Queen's salon was specially designed for the coronation in 1906, the architect of the project was the architect Ingvald Alstad. All furniture was purchased in the XIX century.
