Hagenwil Castle

Switzerland , like no other country in the world, is rich in ancient castles . One of these medieval buildings in the canton of Thurgau is Hagenwil Castle (Schloss Hagenwil). Let's find out what it's interesting.

History of the Swiss castle Hagenville

Since the XIII century, the castle in turn was owned by Rudolf von Hagenwil, the noble families of Landerberg, Paihrehr and Bernhausen. For a long time the fortress belonged to the monastery of St. Galla : it housed the monastery vogt and the summer residence of the abbots. When the monastery was abolished, Hagenville was bought by Benedict Angern, who at that time served there as a manager, and to this day is privately owned by his descendants.

What to see in Hagenville Castle?

Hagenville is a perfectly preserved building located on the water: this is a small pond, which once made it difficult for enemies to access the fortress. Some parts of the building, completed later, have the features of a half-timbered structure, very popular in this German-speaking canton.

Today there is a restaurant called Schloss Hagenwil and a small hotel for several rooms. It's not for nothing that Hagenville is a very popular tourist place, after all, after a tour of the castle you can have lunch, and then stop for the night. The restaurant offers delicious dishes of traditional Swiss and European cuisine, as well as drinks from its own vineyards. In addition to the tour around the castle, you can visit the nearby small Catholic church.

How to get to Hagenville?

Since Hagenville Castle is owned by private individuals, there are no excursions to it. Nevertheless, tourists often come to Amrisville to admire the ancient walls of the fortress and visit the restaurant. To get to the town of Amrisvill from Zurich, you can take the A1 route by pre- renting a car . The journey takes about an hour. A little longer will travel through Winterthur in the railway transport.
