Cathedral of Roskilde

Many centuries in the center of Roskilde is the Cathedral, which adorns the square with its medieval architecture, but inside it is a real mausoleum for almost all the kings of Denmark.

History of the Cathedral of Roskilde

The Roskilde Cathedral is a cathedral in Roskilde, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is also a venue for ceremonies (weddings, for example) and a mausoleum in which, from the 15th century, 39 kings of Denmark were buried in the tombs.

At the site of the Cathedral in the town of Roskilde, until the 15th century, there were at least 2 more churches. It is known that the first wooden church was erected in the 9th century under the reign of the King of Denmark Harald I of the Blue-tooth and by the 11th century it was rebuilt into a stone church. In the 12th century, a brick church was built in the Romanesque style and finally, after a couple of changes in style and architecture, in 1280 the construction of the present cathedral was completed, after which every century it was subjected to small changes outside and inside.

What to see?

As it was said before, there are as many as 39 tombs in the cathedral, some of them are located in the premises under the church or in the chapels. Each of the tombs looks unique, with its own special design. These are real works of art! Interestingly, in one of the halls there was preserved a rather old column with marks, where for many years it was marked by the growth of the kings of Denmark.

Visitors to the cathedral should pay attention to the small hours of the 16th century, which hang over one of the entrances to the cathedral from the south. The clock itself has the same small bell and 3 figures (St. George on a horse, defeated a dragon, and a woman with a man). Every hour the figure of George with his movement allegedly kills the dragon, after which he publishes a dying roar. The figurine of a woman and a man is also not worthless, recovering from the shock after killing the dragon and ringing the bell to inform about a quarter of an hour.

The Cathedral of Roskilde is a very popular and visited place, where every year at least 125 thousand people come from all over the world, because, among other things, churches often hold ceremonies on holidays .

To the tourist on a note

The Roskilde Cathedral is located in the very center of the city and it is easy to get there by public transport (for example, rooms 204, 201A, 358, 600S). If you stay in Roskilde for at least a week, we recommend renting a car with which you will easily reach any sights of the city.
