Laguna Diamante

In the western part of Argentina (almost on the border with Chile), near the city โ€‹โ€‹of Mendoza there is a lake, called Laguna del Diamante or Laguna del Diamante.

general information

The lake is located at the foot of the active Maipo volcano (Maipo), which, reflected in clear water, becomes like a diamond. For this reason the reservoir was given such a name.

It is located at an altitude of 3300 m above sea level and has an area of โ€‹โ€‹14.1 square meters. km. Its average depth is 38.6 m, the maximum depth is 70 m.

Laguna Diamante was formed in 1826 after the volcano erupted during a volcanic eruption, blocking the entrance to the crater. The lake is surrounded by impressive cliffs, the peaks of which reach 3200 m in height. This is an environmental protection area protected by local self-government, as well as by the organization on tourism development and renewal of natural resources.

What is famous for the pond?

For several decades scientists have been trying to unravel one of the main mysteries of Laguna Diamante. The fact is that the lake, located in the crater of an active volcano, according to all laws of nature, must kill any living microorganisms and deter animals. But here flocks of amazing pink flamingos arrive every year, and several species of fish, including the trout family, live in the water. The reservoir for the aborigines of the two neighboring countries is not only a pride, but also a mystical sign.

This lake is considered one of the main sources of fresh water in the whole province, it also feeds the Diamante River. And the pond is replenished by melting rivers surrounding glaciers.

During the second reign of Juan Domingo Peron, an observatory of cosmic rays was built here, run by the National University of Cuyo. The educational institution is engaged in an innovative project to study astronomy.

The journey takes from 2 to 3 hours, and in heavy snowfall it is almost impossible to drive up to a pond. Some areas here are very dangerous, so if you decide to go by car, then be extremely careful.
