Sights of the Voronezh Region

The expanses of Voronezh and its environs, like many other places in Russia, are rich in their natural and man-made beauties. These are reserves and castles, monasteries and numerous museums. In a word, there is something to see in the Voronezh region!

And now a few details about each of these amazing sights of the Voronezh region.

Castle Princess Oldenburg

In the Voronezh region you can see an amazing structure - the castle of the Princess of Oldenburg. He belonged to the granddaughter of Nicholas I, Eugene Maximilianovna, and together with the Ramon land became her wedding gift from Emperor Alexander II. The castle building is made in a simple, but refined Old English style, which is very rare for Russia. In the XIX century, the interior of the palace was luxurious: fireplaces with Italian tiles, a ceiling decorated in the technique of burning, elegant ceiling beams from moren oak. Unfortunately, the chic interiors of the castle have survived to this day only partially.

Reserves of the region

An excellent example of the nature of this area is the Voronezh Biosphere Reserve . Spread over 30 thousand hectares, it is home to many fauna representatives. Deer and wild boars, moose, roe deer and beavers live freely in this nature conservation area. Walking through the expanses of the biosphere reserve is prohibited, but there is an opportunity to visit the local nature museum and beaver nursery.

Divnogorie is not only a museum-preserve, but also an archaeological and architectural monument. Here you can see the farm itself, two cave churches, excavations of the Mayatsky hillfort. In this protected area there are many relict plants, unusual for this area and listed in the Red Book.

Monasteries of the Voronezh Region

Among the religious monuments of the region, the Belogorsky Resurrection Monastery is probably the most interesting. This monastery is located in caves dug in the chalk hills. By the way, on the territory of the Voronezh region there are several semi-abandoned chalk quarries, which are excellent places for photo sessions. As for the monastery, it was opened in 1866, after believers began settling in caves dug near the village of Belogorye, in order to atone for their sins. The monastery is a huge cave complex with many levels and courses. Today, services and liturgies are held here.

Another functioning monastery in the territory of the Voronezh region is the Holy Assumption . It is located in Divnogorje, so it is very convenient to combine the examination of the temple with a tour of the museum-reserve. This monastery is also a cave monastery, but there are also land constructions, including a bell tower and a monastery hotel for pilgrims.

There is also a female monastery in the Voronezh region - Kostomarovsky Holy Spassky . Its caves are impressive in size, and the walls are supported by 12 large chalk columns. In the monastery there are two underground temples, there are also cells for novices, leading a hermit's way of life. It is noteworthy that local residents call the neighborhood of the village of Kostomarovo Russian Palestine, mainly because of the similarity of their landscapes.

Museums of Voronezh and Voronezh region

Not far from the village of Kostenki in the Voronezh region is the eponymous museum under the open sky. In the process of archaeological excavations, unique exhibits were found here: the tools of primitive people, their homes during the Stone Age, and even the skeletons of real mammoths. All this you can see with your own eyes in the archaeological museum-reserve Kostenki, located just 40 km from the regional center.

In Voronezh also there are museums: local lore and literary, theater doll and firefighting, house museums of Nikitin and Durov.
