Leukocytes (white blood cells) are divided into two classes: granulocyte and agranulocyte. Granulocytes create the first line of defense against germs. It is these cells that go before the others to the focus of inflammation and take part in the immune response. Sometimes in the analysis of blood granulocytes are increased - what does this mean and really such an indicator indicates that the body is struggling with some kind of disease?
At what diseases are granulocytes raised?
Most often, if the blood is increased granulocytes, it means that the body has inflammation. This can be a banal caries or a very serious infectious disease, for example, appendicitis .
Often an increase in the total number of such cells occurs when:
- suppurative abscesses of the brain, kidneys, liver and other organs or systems;
- furunculosis ;
- carbunculosis.
It is necessary immediately to see a doctor when granulocytes are raised, because this means that the body is in the process of phagocytosis - a constant struggle with various toxins or foreign microorganisms. For example, it can be sepsis, gangrene or pneumonia. Often, this indicator indicates the presence of cancer.
The level of granulocytes also increases with allergies and helminthic invasions. This may be the result of exposure to the human body of animal poisons or the taking of certain medications, especially adrenaline or corticosteroid hormones.
Other causes of increased granulocytes
Significantly increases the number of granulocytes not only because of diseases and pathological conditions, but also when:
- pregnancy (mainly in the second half);
- during childbirth;
- during intense physical activity;
- before monthly;
- after overeating.
