Shay-Phoksundo


Shay-Phoksundo is a large national park in Nepal . It is on the list of the most picturesque parks in the world. Located at an altitude of more than 2000 m above sea level, it is home to many animals, reptiles and birds.

Geographical location

Shay-Phoksundo is located in the north-western part of Nepal, on the border with the Tibetan upland. The reserve has a diverse landscape, because of which the height of the park in some places increases by 3 times. The highest peak is in the southeast of Shay-Phoksundo, on the Kanjiroba-Himal mountain range.

The area of ​​the park is 3555 sq.m. m, and such dimensions give him the right to be called the largest nature protection zone of Nepal .

Reservoirs of the park

Shay-Phoksundo is a beautiful place. In addition to the magnificent nature, it has interesting natural attractions , one of them is the mountain lake of Phoxundo. It is located at an altitude of 3660 m. The lake is interesting because it has an unusual bright turquoise color. Near the pond is a waterfall. Phoskundo is also adjacent to glaciers. Through the reserve there are several rivers: in the north-east it is the Langu river, in the south - Suligad and Jugdual, which flow into the river Bheri.

Animals and plants

Speaking about the flora, it should be noted that in the vast territory of the park in its various sites grow rare and beautiful plants: blue pine, rhododendron, spruce, bamboo, etc. Dense forests, rocky mountains and numerous ponds created excellent conditions for the life of various fauna. Here live the Indian leopard, the Himalayan bear and the tar, the jackal, the snow leopard, 6 species of reptiles and 29 species of butterflies. In Shay-Phoksundo, there are rare animals - snow leopard and blue sheep. Visiting the park, pay attention to the number of birds, living in forests and on rocks: in total there are more than 200 species.

Aborigines

The amazing fact is that Shay-Phoksundo is a place of residence not only for animals, but also for people. The reserve is officially home to 9,000 people, who mostly profess Buddhism. Religious life of the population is supported by several secluded Buddhist monasteries.

How to get there?

You can drive from the capital of Nepal to Shay-Phoksundo by car. The journey takes about 6.5 hours. First, you need to leave Kathmandu in a western direction along the Prithvi Hwy road and drive 400 km to the city of Kankri. Then follow the signs, and in an hour or 40 minutes you will be in place.
