Liechtenstein Museum of Art

Many tourists who visited the small principality of Liechtenstein , it seems that they visited medieval Europe. Ancient castles and houses, quiet streets, manicured gardens and small settlements - all this is a small state with an absolute monarchy. And only the avenue of modern buildings, one of which the Liechtenstein Art Museum of the city of Vaduz (Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein) , the capital of Liechtenstein, returns to reality.

The Museum of Art is the official state museum of contemporary art, otherwise it is a museum of fine arts. It is located in the very center of Vaduz, close to such important sights as the Government House, the Post Museum , the National Museum of Liechtenstein and Vaduz Castle , so it's impossible not to notice it. A large black toned cube made of concrete and basalt, decorated with small specks of the river pebble of the Rhine, which flows through the whole of Liechtenstein. The building looks unusually and is striking from everywhere. Modern design is the result of the work of the tandem of architects from Switzerland: Christian Kerets, Henry Degelo and Meinrad Morgan, and the technically complex project looks simple and modest. The building is considered unusual, especially against the background of the Middle Ages, and in 2008 it entered the ten most ugliest buildings in the world.

A bit of the history of the museum

The Liechtenstein Museum of Art officially opened on November 12, 2000, its total area is 1750 square meters, which was divided into six white exhibition halls. The main direction of the museum is installations and sculptures, although some of it is undoubtedly taken by an amazing collection of paintings. The pride of the museum is a personal collection of the princes of Liechtenstein, it is one of the largest collections in the world: approximately 1500 original canvases dating from around the 17th century. You can get acquainted with the works of Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Leonardo da Vinci. Part of the collection is in the personal residence of the prince.

Many of the exhibits of the National Art Museum of Liechtenstein were combined in compositions along similar lines in culture or civilization. The Principality of Liechtenstein is dedicated to a separate composition detailing the geography, biosphere and history of a small country. Modern art covers the XIX-XX century and the creations of our days.

The museum began its history long before the opening in 1967, when ten paintings were presented to Liechtenstein. These paintings became the beginning of the state museum. The curator of the meeting was then appointed Doctor of Historical Sciences Georg Malina, who significantly multiplied the collection of the future museum of art works from other countries. The building itself was built on the donations of private investors, and then donated it to the state.
