Government House


The government house in Vaduz is one of the business cards of the city, a popular tourist attraction . The government house is the official residence of the principality government. The building is located on Peter Kaiser Square, in the government quarter, in the southern part of the city's pedestrian zone. In this building there was the Landtag - the local parliament - in the periods from 1905 to 1969, from 1970 to 1989. and from 1995 to 2008; now the seat of parliament is a new building, located right next to the Government House. In the people the building is called "Big House". In 1992, the Government House was recognized as a historical monument.

About the building

This very elegant and beautiful building was built in 1903-1905 in neo-baroque style, designed by Gustav Ritter von Neumann. The facade is decorated with the arms of the country against the background of the starry sky; on the right and on the left there are frescoes depicting, respectively, the Verwaltung and the Law (Justiz). Besides the elegant exterior, the building boasts progressive design solutions - for example, this is the first building in Liechtenstein with central heating; In addition, the house has a modern sewer system, and for its lighting from the outset, electricity was used.

Just next to the Government House is the new Landtag building; Also on the square is a memorial dedicated to the famous musician, composer Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger, next to the house in which he was born.
