Mausoleum of Negosh

At the top of the Lovcen mountain, on the territory of the National Park of the same name, is the mausoleum of Negosh - the famous tourist attraction of Montenegro . Peter II Petrovich-Negosh was the ruler of the country, its spiritual leader, Metropolitan of Montenegro and Brodsky. He made a significant contribution to gaining independence from Turkish rule. Niegosh died in October 1851. He wished to be buried in the chapel founded by him on the top of Lovcen in order to "admire his native Montenegro from a height". However, his ashes were first buried in the Cetinsky monastery , and only in 1855 they moved to the chapel.

Mausoleum today

The remains of Negosh returned to Cetinje monastery once again, as the chapel was badly damaged during the First World War, and then, after reconstruction, carried out in 1925, they were again moved to the chapel.

The modern mausoleum was built in 1974 by the project of Ivan Meštrović. It is made of stone, its roof is covered with gold leaf. The entrance is decorated in the form of a gate, in front of which there are statues of two black women, made of black granite. To see the sarcophagus, you need to go down the steps. Inside the mausoleum there is a monument to Peter Negosh and his marble sarcophagus.

The monument was made by the sculptor Ivan Meštrovič from the Yablanitsky granite greenish-gray color. The height of the statue is 3.74 m. It is interesting that the "fee" of the master, at his request, was a piece of cheese and a prsuta - the food that Negosh used to eat. Near the mausoleum is an observation deck, from where a very beautiful view of the National Park and the Bay of Kotor opens.

How to get to the Mausoleum of Negosh?

You can reach Lovcen Mountain through Kotor or Cetinje . From Cetinje, go along Lovćenska towards Peka Pavlovića. The journey will take about an hour. From Kotor, the road will take longer, although Lovcen is much closer to him than Cetinje: there simply is not a straight road of good quality. Therefore, it is necessary to go through Cetina or along country roads.

Visitors to the Lovcen National Park can easily get to the mausoleum of Nygosh. It is not necessary to search for it on the map of the reserve, and the pedestrian path leading to it is marked with paint. You can get here with a car, and then you have to go upstairs, which consists of 461 steps.

The Mausoleum of Negosh can be visited any day from 9:00 to 18:00. The cost of the visit is 2.5 euros.
