Museum of the History of Jerusalem

The Jerusalem History Museum details the main stages of the city's development since its inception to this day. It is located in a powerful fortress, which is called the Citadel or the Tower of David . It is located inside the city wall, near the Jaffa Gate .

History of the museum

The fortress was built in the 2nd century BC. e. with the aim of strengthening weaknesses in the defense system. During the conquest of the territory, the Citadel was often destroyed and rebuilt. Therefore, the archaeological finds found during the excavations, were discouraging, because the age of some of them scientists have determined how 2700 years. It is not surprising that they decided to put them practically on the spot of detection.

What is interesting about the Museum of the History of Jerusalem?

The citadel is not a holy place, but it is popular with tourists. The entire exposition was located in the inner courtyard and walls of the Tower. The museum was opened in 1989 and gave the population an opportunity to see objects telling the history of the city, starting from 3000 years. In the halls are the originals, which were found during archaeological excavations in the Citadel and its environs. The inscriptions under the exhibits in the museum are made in three languages: Hebrew, Arabic, English.

The museum reflects not only the theme of history, the exposition also tells about the present and the future. Temporary exhibitions, concerts, seminars and lectures are held here. They are created without additional scenery, they are the ancient stones of the citadel, which add special entourage to events.

While visiting the museum it is worthwhile to climb the fortress walls to see the beautiful circular panorama of the city and its surroundings. It is also worthwhile to stay late in the night, because in the dark the light-musical performance "Night Mystery" is held here, its analogues do not exist in the world. The show lasts only 45 minutes, and tickets are recommended to be purchased in advance.

Information for tourists

The museum works from 10.00 to 17.00 from Sunday to Thursday and on Saturday, and on Friday from 10.00 to 14.00. The ticket costs up to $ 8 from an adult and $ 4 from a child.

From the central bus station you can get to the Museum of the History of Jerusalem by bus number 20, which goes straight to the Jaffa Gate.
