Lecoq

So the nature ordered that Uruguay does not possess either a damp Amazon wetland or the Andean mountain system, like neighboring countries. But do not jump to conclusions that there is nothing to watch here. On the contrary! In Uruguay, there are all conditions for the creation of national parks and reserves. One of such protected corners of nature is Lecoq.

Features of the park

Surprisingly, Lecoq Park does not owe its foundation to any biologist or zoologist, but to the architect Mario Paysée. The prerequisite for this was the fact that Francisco Lecocq, a politician and entrepreneur, once founded a land fund and worked actively to create a reserve. So it turned out that his case was continued. Mario Paysée in the period from 1946 to 1949 carefully designed the park project, where it would be possible to save and restore rare species of animals.

Today, Lecoq has more than 120 hectares of land. The territory also covers wetlands, which further diversifies the fauna in the reserve. Characteristically, the park also organizes breeding, there are several active scientific programs related to the conservation of endangered species and the fight against environmental illiteracy.

Flora and fauna

The vast expanse of the Lecoq reserve contains a lot of wonderful animals. In the park, such diverse animals as llamas, capybaras, moufflons, fallow deer, lions, zebras, ostriches of Emu, noses, lynxes, gray foxes have found their shelter. Here lives one of the largest flocks of antelopes, whose species is on the verge of extinction. In total there are more than 30 species of rare animals in the park, behind which they take care of, treat and protect.

How to get to Lecoq Park?

The reserve is located in the vicinity of the city of Santiago Vasquez. You can get here by car, along the road Del Tranvia a la Barra, the road will take no more than 15 minutes. In addition, tourist excursions from Montevideo are organized here. In extreme cases, from Sagnago Vasquez to Lecoq, you can walk on foot in just half an hour.
