Institute and Museum of Voltaire

The house where the great man lived is a real treasure for history lovers, for the housing of a historical person can tell a lot about the atmosphere in which a person worked and what inspired him.

History of the Voltaire Institute and Museum

Not far from the center of Geneva is the street Le Delis, where the Institute and the Voltaire Museum is located, from 1755 to 1760 it was the home of Voltaire (the great French philosopher and poet of the 18th century). Voltaire himself gave the name of the building "Les Délices" and, apparently, the street was named in honor of this. Together with his wife, he set up a house and even broke a small garden around the house, which has survived to this day.

What to see?

Since the middle of the 19th century, nobody lived in this house and in 1929 he was bought out to transform it into a museum, but only in 1952 the house was conceived. Since that year the museum has been studying the works of Voltaire and other famous figures of his time. The museum presents many paintings (with the image of Voltaire, his friends and relatives), iconographic documents, over a thousand manuscripts, fiction and other art objects. In addition, the interior in the house is presented, as during the life of Voltaire, so the visitors of the museum can see in what environment the philosopher worked. In 2015, officially the name of the site was changed to the "Voltaire Museum".

It houses one of the four sections of the Geneva Library, which has about 25,000 copies of various literature, but you can get on an excursion to the library only with a special pass. In any case, the library is open from 9:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday.
