Braunschweig monument

In the beautiful Alpine garden, on the shores of Lake Geneva , the majestic Braunschweig Monument is located. It is located in the heart of Geneva and attracts tourists with its extraordinary Gothic architecture. The Braunschweig monument is one of Switzerland's most interesting historical sites, as well as an important architectural monument.

History of creation

The monument was erected in honor of the Duke of Braunschweig. He was not the best ruler of the country, he led a lascivious lifestyle and lost a fortune after gambling. Before his death, he bequeathed 22 million francs to the city budget, but with the condition that in honor of him a beautiful monument will be erected on one of the coastal avenues. At that time the bequeathed sum was of great importance and very much helped in city affairs. The question of building a monument in Geneva caused very great controversy and even protests. But all the same, the city authorities kept their word and erected a monument about the Duke of Braunschweig.

Architecture

The entrance to the Braunschweig monument is "guarded" by two marble lions that were installed during the Middle Ages. Behind them is a magnificent three-story pavilion. It is decorated with Gothic towers and frescoes, carved columns and arches. This combination of many elements is puzzling and delighted by many architects, but in general it looks very good. Inside the pavilion there is a sarcophagus, the lid of which is decorated with the image of the duke himself in full growth.

How to get there?

The Braunschweig monument is located on the Mont Blanc seafront, two blocks from the bridge of the same name. The public transport will take you to the waterfront (bus number 61), you need to get off at the Gare Cornavin stop and then go down a block below.
