Huaskaran


Huaskaran is a national park in the Cordillera-Blanca mountain range, named in honor of the Emperor Uiskar. The Huascaran Park in Peru occupies an area of ​​3,400 square kilometers, on its territory there are 41 rivers, 660 glaciers, about 330 lakes and Mount Huaskaran, which is the highest in this country (6,768 meters). In 1985, the Huascaran Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On such a large territory lives a huge number of birds (about 115 species) and animals (10 species), for example, vicuña, tapirs, Peruvian deer, pumas, spectacled bears. The local flora is represented by 780 species of plants - there is even a unique Puy Raymonda, whose blossom consists of 10,000 flowers. Puy Raymond grows to a height of up to 12 meters and a diameter of up to 2.5 meters.

Scary facts

  1. Mount Huaskaran is notorious for its catastrophes. In 1941, due to the breakthrough of the lake, a village was called up, which killed about 5,000 people and destroyed the city of Huaraz.
  2. In 1962, due to the same mudflow, 4,000 people died, but this time it was caused by a breakdown in the glacier.
  3. In 1970, an earthquake occurred that caused large ice collapses, resulting in the destruction of the city of Yonggang and killing about 20,000 people.
